In the marketplace of reissues, the music is far too often presented in a void: repackaged, reproduced, and redistributed without the advent of any true historical context. When it comes to the sound of black American music and its history, the story is just as important to anything else. That’s why the goal of 180 Proof Records is to mightily buck this trend using the sound of the past to weave new stories of Soul, jazz, funk. In other words, stories that could only be born in the USA. 180 Proofs' mission began with Detroit’s enigmatic Strata Records (not to be confused with its close cousin, Strata-East). The Strata catalog consists of over 20 unreleased masters, in addition, to the 6 commercially released albums. Using the original master tapes, Amir has brought to life over 15 releases to date. Moreover, with access to the original multi-track tapes, Amir will create proper remixes, restorations, and album covers from the catalog. By creating full scope of history and synergy between the players of the past and the audience of today, we hope to educate and illuminate the uninitiated and curious. At the head of 180 Proof, is veteran record collector, DJ, record label executive, and music historian, Amir Abdullah aka DJ Amir. Furthermore, 180 Proof is Amir’s way to act a living and breathing conduit for the music, the musicians, and labels that never got a fair shot.
