4AD

Bio

Famed for its extraordinary roster and visually distinctive identity, 4AD is one of the world's most celebrated independent record labels.

Established in London in 1980 by record shop employees Ivo Watts-Russell and Peter Kent, 4AD became synonymous with goth, dreampop and US college rock scenes by launching the careers of Bauhaus, The Breeders, Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Modern English, Lush, Pixies, This Mortal Coil and Throwing Muses. Also in their ranks were the peerless design team 23 Envelope / v23; helmed by visionary designer Vaughan Oliver, their record sleeves helped define a generation.

Into the 00s and the label continued to lead the way, working with the likes of Blonde Redhead, Bon Iver, Deerhunter, Grimes, The Mountain Goats, St. Vincent, Stereolab, TV On The Radio and Scott Walker.

Now in to their fifth decade and with boundary pushing artists such as Big Thief, Daughter, Dry Cleaning, Future Islands, Aldous Harding, Julia Jacklin, The National and YHWH Nailgun on the books, 4AD are still out front, setting the example for others to follow.
