Merge Records

Merge Records is an independent record label based in Durham, NC. Founded in 1989 by Laura Ballance and Mac McCaughan. Superchunk’s McCaughan and Ballance started Merge as a way to release their own music and the music of their friends. Merge Records has grown from a group of friends assembling 7”s in Ballance’s bedroom to become one of the most influential independent record labels in the country, releasing the work of artists such as: The Magnetic Fields, Neutral Milk Hotel, Lambchop, The Mountain Goats, Caribou, She & Him, Superchunk and many more. Merge Records will celebrate its 35th anniversary throughout 2024 with a subscription series, a multi-day festival in July, and more.
